Business Intelligence Dashboard Implementation

Business Case:

A global national financial services company’s Recoveries Department had a need for identifying trends in their cash recoveries and for monitoring the effectiveness of the legal resources they utilize.  Previously this data was gathered, stored in spreadsheets, and manually analyzed.  While the storage of this data had since been integrated onto their Teradata server, it was still being manually pulled and analyzed by analysts that work for the Recoveries team.  Due to the manual processes and the variety of resources retrieving and analyzing this data, both the process and the results were inefficient and error prone.  This had resulted in second guessing of  the conclusions.  These inefficiencies were leading to rework by other associates.  The company needed to find a repeatable process that would deliver consistent results regardless of which analyst was involved in gathering and analyzing data.

Solution:

CapTech implemented a robust business intelligence solution by leading the capture of functional and technical requirements, the design and development efforts, as well as being responsible for the overall management of the solution.  Upon analyzing the client’s needs, CapTech recommended implementation of a high availability data mart on the existing Teradata data warehouse platform for hosting of the business intelligence layer.  SAP BusinessObjects was selected as the data analyis and reporting tool because of its strong capability in creating dashboards, along with standard and ad hoc reports.  SAP BusinessObjects Designer was used to develop the semantic layer on top of the data mart.  CapTech translated the client's business requirements and used Web Intelligence, Crystal, and Xcelsius to deliver 36 customized analytic dashboards.  This solution provided drill down features to enable users to navigate from the dashboards into the detailed data.  Finally, these dashboards and reports were integrated into the client’s existing department portal for access by the end users.

Tools:
  • Teradata
  • SAP BusinessObjects XI
  • SAP BusinessObjects Universe Designer
  • SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence
  • SAP BusinessObjects Xcelsius
  • SAP BusinessObjects Crystal Reports
Results:
  • Standardized reporting layer led to huge savings in time and effort spent in data analysis, from 4 -5 hours per report to just minutes
  • Provided enhanced analytics featuring interactive data visualization graphics and charts identifying trends and effectiveness of the recoveries process
  • Ensured consistency of analyses across different end user resources
  • Eliminated data integrity issues
  • Enabled end users to perform data analysis using dashboards as well as access to detailed level data
