A Fortune 500 automobile retailer was experiencing rapid growth in data volumes along with increased business user demands on the data warehouse. This was resulting in degradation of performance and responsiveness in the production of operational, financial and analytical reporting processes. The client desperately needed to expand its data warehouse load and query capacity and avoid adverse impacts to its managerial decision making capabilities. Teradata’s Very Large Database (VLD) technology was chosen to support complex queries and analyses necessary to maintaining productivity and competitiveness. Implementation of Teradata required the complete migration of existing SQL Server and Sybase solutions.
CapTech consultants partnered to successfully convert over 300,000 lines of code and replace the existing SQL Server and Sybase solutions. Complex report scripts were converted and quality assurance practices were used to identify and resolve logical errors in current reports and the client’s extraction, transformation and load (ETL) processes. Data quality issues in tables and reports were identified, with some values as far off as 60%, and corrections implemented. Overall, 110 data issues were resolved. The CapTech team tested and improved query performance by an average of 80% by optimizing queries and identifying performance enhancement opportunities. Detailed planning and proper communication ensured the affected stakeholders and support services were informed of critical path cutover tasks. Teradata training materials on architecture, coding, performance improvement, and best practices were developed and training provided for 145 business users and technical personnel. CapTech’s solution also offered the scalability required by the tremendous data growth experienced by the client and meets future needs anticipated by their management.
