Know Your Cuts of Meat - The Big Data Butch Dilema
A recent blog post by Raju Bodapati sparked a conversation with coworker, Cameron Snapp, last night. Raju mentions in his blog the large amount of data that can be gathered in simple day to day tasks which Cameron and I took farther, commenting that basically anything you do can have absurd amounts data collected on it. Sports analytics are fairly established and an easy concept - the amount of baseball data from pitching attributes, to hitting quality, to defensive alignments is massive and quickly becoming a target of data architects in Big Data efforts.
Big Data: Don’t Forget About the Information Architect
There is a lot of pressure on companies today to take advantage of Big Data. For many companies Big Data has become a competitive differentiator. They are making substantial investments in solutions and initiatives to collect and analyze the ever-growing volume of data available in the digital world. This pressure has led many companies to make decisions and buy tools that have hamstrung their ability to mine the data they are collecting. In this short paper we will explain what some of these critical pitfalls are and how to avoid them.

Getting Started with Plug And Play Digital Marketing
While recently working on a project to implement a Tag Management System for a Fortune 50 company, I had the opportunity for my mind to be blown all over again that today’s digital marketer can choose from more than 550 distinct vendor-provided tracking scripts and pixels to assemble a powerful and robust digital marketing infrastructure.
UILayoutGuide – Auto Layout’s Invisible Helpers
Like it or not, Auto Layout has become the de facto standard for controlling the position and size of views within an iOS. Auto Layout allows you to specify the relationships between views or the relationship of a view to a constant to determine the size and position of the view.

BE Agile: Don’t just DO Agile
On Thursday, April 19th I attended the Project Management Institute's Central Virginia Chapter's (PMI-CVC) dinner meeting. The keynote speaker, Dr. Ahmed Sidky, addressed the question, "What's the big fuss about agile?" One of Dr. Sidky's points in his address was that Agile is not a process, methodology, or framework; but rather Agile is a mindset. Dr. Sidky's opinion is that a fixed mindset and an agile mindset have the following characteristics:
Managing Information in the Big Data Lake
The build-out architecture of a data lake allows companies to capture and stream massive amounts of big data, and real world visualizations – all in one place. This revolutionizes business by putting critical assets and analytics, the power of numbers at your fingertips in real-time. While companies have gathered the information, there is no standard system to organize or catalog the data to be used. The information in your data lake is only as good as it’s relevance to connect it, govern it and make it accessible to key members of your team that need it and restrict access to protect your company and data against security breaches.
Big Data: How to Start Right and Avoid the Pitfalls
Big Data is the future of business. According to CloudTweaks.com, as much as 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are produced each day, with most of this data being captured by Big Data. With its ability to transfer all data sources all into one centralized place, Big Data provides opportunities, clearer visions, customer conversations and transactions. However, with the dazzling big promise of Big Data comes a potentially huge letdown. If this vast pool of information resources is not accessible or usable, it becomes useless. This paper examines strategies for building the most value into your Big Data system by enabling process controls to effectively mine, access and secure Big Data.
BlackBerry APIs Need Some Work
While unstaffed the last few weeks, a manager tapped me to help put together a BlackBerry proof of concept for one our clients. I have had experience working on a BlackBerry project from a previous employer's project, however I did not have hands on experience programming the device myself. I was looking forward to this as I had been wanting to do some dabbling with mobile devices, I just had not had the time.
