Summary

A top oil and gas production company approached CapTech to automate its carbon emissions reporting process for internal use and government compliance. CapTech’s systems integration, data aggregation, and process automation experts developed a product that enabled precise and efficient emissions reporting.

Challenge

The oil and gas industry is heavily regulated and requires all entities to submit emissions reports to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on an annual basis. Additionally, emissions reports for internal use are needed on a more frequent basis.

The existing process for emissions reporting was manual and time-consuming, requiring hours of work across multiple teams to pull, review, and compile the data. The manual nature of the work also led to inconsistencies in reporting methods and its results, further emphasizing the need for a standardized, automated solution for accurate emissions reporting.

Approach

The CapTech team gained a thorough understanding of the federal and internal reporting requirements and the data and calculations needed to complete the work. Next, the team sourced the required input data into the cloud, applied logic and calculations to create reporting outputs, and stored the outputs in a secure, centralized cloud repository.

CapTech then surfaced the data in a dynamic dashboard that can be leveraged by the client to complete all necessary reporting. CapTech also provided training to all business users on proper report use and maintenance.

Throughout the development of this product, the CapTech team monitored shifting EPA guidelines and was able to quickly pivot to ensure the tool stayed current and compliant.

Results

The emission reporting tool:

  • Enabled compliance through the end-to-end automation of the EPA-required reporting process.
  • Improved the accuracy of carbon emissions reporting to both the EPA and internal teams.
  • Saved internal teams more than 2,300 hours of work per year through automation.
  • Reduced vendor costs by $300,000 annually by replacing the need to outsource data aggregation and quality assurance.
